Before ordering Roller Barrier it makes sense to carry out a site survey. In our recent video we look at the questions that need to be answered to ensure a successful Roller Barrier installation.
Why You Need a Site Survey
While some Roller Barrier installations are very simple, many require some planning and forethought to make certain the installation successfully achieves desired aims.
Our Roller Barrier non aggressive anti climb system is very simple, consisting of robust polycarbonate rollers mounted on a firmly mounted central shaft. The roller dimensions have been carefully determined to make it impossible to gain a reliable grip. By installing this barrier along the edges of rooftops, walls and fence tops, climbers and intruders are safely prevented.
The central shaft of the Roller Barrier installation must run in a straight line. Changes in height and direction are accommodated by splitting the installation into multiple Roller Barrier runs. Each ‘run’ is a straight length of Roller Barrier. Junctions and corners are protected by either overlapping Roller Barrier runs or by butting one straight Roller Barrier run up against the next.
A Roller Barrier site survey needs to determine how many Roller Barrier runs are required and the length of each run. This essential information determines the number of Roller Barrier components required.
Another important site survey assessment is whether single row, double row or Trigard triple row Roller Barrier is needed. Single row Roller Barrier is enough for many installations, to safely prevent access to a rooftop or protect a boundary wall or fence. Double row Roller Barrier is ideal for higher security applications, locations where access to an edge or ledge could be dangerous or sites where its beneficial to raise the height of a boundary wall or fence. Trigard triple row Roller Barrier is particularly useful for protecting low level structures that might be used to gain higher access. Triple row Roller Barrier is also used to safely protect external equipment, such as fan housings and air conditioning systems, from unwanted climbers.
The Roller Barrier site survey should determine any areas in which double or triple row Roller Barrier would be beneficial. It should also be remembered that the Roller Barrier system is very versatile and adaptable so if there are custom requirements these can be accommodated.
A key aspect of a site survey is to clarify exactly what is intended to be achieved. In some situations the aim is to make an area safe for users, such as children, without turning it into a fortress by surrounding the boundary with anti climb spikes. In another installation the requirement may be to prevent intruders from climbing onto rooftops. And another installation might need to bolster perimeter security to prevent intruders. In order to fully and reliably achieve desired security aims it may be necessary to combine Roller Barrier with other security precautions.
Capture Video and Take Photographs
Experience has demonstrated the value of capturing some video and taking photographs of a site while also measuring dimensions. These visual records are enormously valuable in determining exactly what’s needed, in all areas, to achieve the desired aims.
The primary step in a site assessment is to identify problem areas which may be where intruders have gained access in the past. Examine these areas closely to identify the footholds, handholds and platforms that may have been used. The overall anti climb security solution will need to ensure these access points are rigorously protected.
Another important consideration is to be aware that, when one area is secured, determined intruders can be prompted to find alternative routes. So this needs to be borne in mind when conducting a site survey. For a fully effective solution all areas need to be protected and this can sometimes involve the use of various anti-intruder barriers in addition to Roller Barrier.
How Much Roller Barrier Do You Need?
Roller Barrier is sold by the metre. All areas in which Roller Barrier is to be installed need to be carefully measured and divided into straight Roller Barrier runs. Drafting a site plan, alongside the previously captured images and video, is a key recommendation. The dimensions of each enumerated Roller Barrier run should be clearly noted as these determine the number and type of each required component.
For single row Roller Barrier, 10 Roller Barrier cups are required for each metre of Roller Barrier run. Roller Barrier central shaft is available in 2 metre lengths which can be cut to any desired length and joined together with joining spigots. The shaft must be supported by brackets at 2 metre intervals or closer. Supporting brackets at every metre or 1.5 metres can be recommended in some situations. Then the ends of each Roller Barrier run need to be appropriately terminated with end security fixings.
If you are uncertain about which type of bracket is right for your installation simply provide some details (including your site survey plan and images) and our experts will help.
Custom Options and Multi-Row Roller Barrier
As previously noted, double and triple row Roller Barrier may be needed for some installations or for parts of an overall site solution. These multi row installations require specific brackets and more Roller Barrier components.
Roller Barrier cups are the most visible element of the protective barrier and these are available from stock in either black, white, blue, green or anthracite. Bespoke Roller Cups can also be manufactured to order to match any standard RAL colour.
